When I was in secondary school in Barbados, we were given notes to take home to get permission to start swimming lessons. I never took the note home because the very thought of being seen in a swimsuit filled me with dread. The 13 year old me felt ashamed of her body and didn’t want anyone to make fun of her thighs or everything else I imagined was wrong with my body.
Over the years I always secretly wanted to learn to swim but I had a fear of drowning, coupled with the fear of being seen in a swimsuit. It was only when I reached my 40s that I discovered swimdresses. I remember eagerly clicking on to websites like SimplyBe and Marisota and swiftly purchasing a number of swimdresses that I felt comfortable in because they came to mid-thigh.
With my confidence boosted, I started to attend aqua aerobics classes. I was fascinated by how free and light I felt in the water. I wasn’t afraid to be at the front of the class and I always gave every move my all. I must admit I often whooped with delight as I leapt about in the water.
When I mentioned to a dear friend of mine who was a swim teacher that I wanted to learn to swim, he gave me one-to-one lessons early in the morning. I’m sure I was a nightmare to teach because I was so scared of not being able to feel the bottom of the pool. Once I learned the basics, I started swimming for an hour every weekday morning before work for two years running. I would sometimes marvel that I was actually doing something that I had feared for so many years!
Do you see how I would have missed out if I hadn’t bought that first swimsuit? If I hadn’t plucked up the courage to tell someone what I secretly wanted to do?
Is there something that you’ve always wanted to do or try, but lack the confidence to give it a go? What would you be doing right now if you weren’t scared?
